The POV flips back and forth between the documentary and the footage that was recorded by the Hell House team, and we learn the entire terrifying story…complete with the scariest clowns I have ever seen. A poorly lit hallway, poorly shot by some terrified 24-year-old ghost hunter. Would it make it any scarier to know this hallway's intimate, five-decade-deep connection to the hallways of another house, over on the other side of the county? Actually, in some cases, it might, like "The Conjuring" Universe, Argento's Three Mothers trilogy, and some of the "Paranormal Activity" films. The mockumentary structure splices in the Carmichaels’ own home-video footage, which eerily prefigures events unfolding around the three film-makers.

And even if you don’t know any Hell House backstory, Carmichael Manor does a decent job filling in the blanks and weaving its own eerie story. Those damn clowns—who ooze evil despite never speaking and barely moving—do a lot of the heavy lifting though. Margot receives a message from Chase saying he is back and has met new friends. However, it turns out to be a diversion tactic, as Chase has already been killed. In the final moments, it is revealed that Margot was connected to the clowns, who were a part of the Satanic cult started by Andrew Tully at the Abaddon Hotel.

We know they're all (but one, most likely) going to die because we're watching a movie called "Hell House," but now we know why, and we can guess as to how. The series creator also reveals a surprise correlation between President James Collins’ character arc and a ’90s horror favorite. The actor has played a handful of distinctly different characters since the series launch, each one meeting a grisly end thanks to Chucky.

Patrick is identified as the clown and the one who tried to abduct Margot as a child. In a final scene, Patrick apologises to a camera, before yelling at an unseen man to be quiet, departing through a doorway into a red-tinted room, implied to be another gate to Hell as seen in previous films. As much as I love all of the films in the franchise, the first has always been the best (in my opinion). But, Carmichael Manor is surprisingly strong, and I would place it a close second. The story is well-constructed, the acting is decent, and those damned clowns are back to creep us all out once again.
The Carmichael Manor includes a post-credits scene that all but begs for a continuation. Cognetti still has plenty of stories left to tell with the franchise’s mythology, too, and the filmmaker teases where he’d like to take it next. It turns out that Lake of Fire was very nearly the end of the franchise for Cognetti, except he couldn’t shake loose some unexplored corners of the story. Satan wasn't always a red demon with horns, cloven feet and a pitchfork.

However, things did not go as planned, and it was Patrick who, under the influence of the evil forces, killed his own family. In the film’s final scene, archive footage shows Patrick dressing up as the clown, confirming that he was indeed behind the murders of Archie, Arthur, and Catherine. As a result, Patrick’s story is directly connected to the tragic and eerie events at Abaddon Hotel.

After not finding anything suitable, they instead began searching for real haunted house attractions to shoot in. This isn’t Amityville Horror—Margot and company haven’t invested anything but time, so they could leave at any moment, plus the freaky footage they capture early in their visit would be more than enough to bring Margot’s website zillions of clicks. It isn’t just Cognetti’s solid deployment of the backstory that impresses; he and cinematographer Josh Layton also show a devious command of camera mechanics, vital to the subjective found-footage experience.
In the present day, we meet Margot (Bridget Rose Perrotta), a self-styled internet sleuth whose latest obsession is the famously unsolved Carmichael case. She’s given access to the manor for five days, accompanied by her level-headed girlfriend Rebecca (Destiny Brown) and her brother Chase (James Liddell), who’s has some mental-health struggles but is putting on a good face to help Margot out. Everyone has a camera, everyone’s filming all the time, and thanks to Carmichael Manor’s documentary frame story, we know it doesn’t end well for anyone.
The film depicts a documentary using found footage recovered from filmmaker Margot Bentley, her girlfriend Rebecca Vickers, and brother Chase Bentley. The three all died whilst spending four nights investigating Carmichael Manor, a remote house in Rockland County, New York, mentioned to be one town over from the Abaddon Hotel. The recovered footage was edited together by Margot’s friend Bradley Moynahan, who provides commentary alongside journalist Alicia Cavalini. The film’s narrative provides connections to previous films and the franchise’s lore involving the hotel and cult leader Andrew Tully. There are a lot of found-footage movies out there, but not many have infused this much detail into their world-building, certainly not enough to sustain four films (though that’s being kind to part three, by far the weakest entry). You don’t need to have seen the other Hell House LLC movies to make it through Carmichael Manor, although being familiar with at least the first film will make the references and Easter eggs more potent.
They show sin, the torture of the damned in hell, and usually end with a depiction of heaven. But theologians have pointed out that Pope Francis has stressed the reality of hell several times in recent years. Indeed, for today’s Catholics at least, hell still means the hopeless anguish of God’s absence. After a few more rounds of re-cuts, the film was locked just before its first public screening at the Telluride Horror Show in October 2015. The film would also screen at Fear Fete Film Festival the same week, where it won the best paranormal film award.
For the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke to Cognetti about creating an original story away from the Abaddon and keeping the scares fresh within the found footage format. Learning artifacts from the hotel are being exhibited at a local antique store, Margot and Rebecca investigate. Rebecca recognizes a grandfather clock from the hotel, finding film reels, letters, and a cross pendant in a hidden compartment. Chase is frightened by the clowns and a masked woman, convincing Margot and Rebecca that the manor is actually haunted.
She was nearly kidnapped during a county fair when she was a child but could never identify the culprits, leading to a life-long obsession with unsolved cases. After arriving at the Carmichael Manor, Margort and Rebecca are greeted by Daniel, who looks after the estate. Havel's tapes document the company's arrival at the Abaddon Hotel as they set it up for Halloween.
Along with her estate-agent girlfriend Rebecca (Destiny Leilani Brown) and mentally ill brother Chase (James Liddell), the suicidally undaunted Margot decides to spend five nights on the supposedly haunted property, cameras at the ready. The Carmichael Manor keeps the scares feeling fresh, which is no easy task now four films deep into a found footage franchise. Disturbing text messages from Chase drive the two women to flee into the car, but the cult members surround them. Returning to the manor once again, Margot hears Chase calling for her, leaving Rebecca, who is killed by Catherine’s ghost. Margot finds Chase’s eyeless corpse, before being stalked by the clown, who corners and attacks her.
